To inspire photographers from amateurs to professionals, Instagram community @my_365 challenges their community to take a photo a day every day for a year. Topics are assigned on a daily basis and the results are astounding. Their community has now over 200,000 tagged photos with more than 8000 people participating on a daily basis. Today, we chat with one of their team members, Tim Prust aka @timy_p on their creative pursuits.

1. How did @my_365 start? What was the idea behind it?

The idea behind it is simply to take a photo a day for a year.  In taking a photo a day, we believe, it pushes your creativity and technical knowledge, no matter if you are a novice or professional.  It is also a great way to document your family, kids, pets or your world, daily, and will be a great set of images to look back at for years.

Initially, there was another Project 365 Instagram community that decided to call it quits at the end of 2013.  My friend Jill Marzion @jillmarz, whom I discovered the community from, was a part of that community in 2013.. as was I, near the end of the 2013 year.  Jill and I had conversations about starting one for 2014, and she took the ball and ran with it. With the help of myself and the enlistment of some other team members, we have grown to a nice community within Instagram.

3. Are all photos focused on Mobile Photography or Digital Cameras are allowed?

We believe anything goes.  I personally use a mixture of both because I don’t always have access to my DLSR.  As Chase Jarvis puts it, “The best camera is the one that’s with you” and we all follow that belief too.  Phone, point and shoot, DSLR, etc…it doesn’t matter – all are welcome.

4. How does one become a part of the community?

It’s easy.  Follow @my_365 on Instagram and start tagging your photos #my_365 along with the theme for each specific day.  We also encourage everyone to look around and support one another as it makes for a great little community.

5. Some communities are quite partial in their judgments or picks, what is @my_365‘s criteria when you pick a photo?

Some of the technicalities of being featured are that you tag #my_365 and the theme’s tag for that specific day (i.e. #messy or #door, etc…).  In addition the photo must be posted the same day of the given theme.  Other than that there really isn’t much more to it.  We try to have a diverse selection of subjects.  Everyone interprets each theme a little different and we try to find contrasting interpretations each day if possible.

6. Are you involved or have you done collabs with communities like Grryo/Ampt Community or other Mobile Photography Communities? If No, would you be willing to do so?

We currently are not involved or have not done any collabs with other communities, but we would be more than open to discussing collaboration opportunities with other communities.  Know of any that are interested, send them our way!

7. Looking at the vast social platforms and the exposure Mobile Photography and Photography has gained so far, has @my_365 gotten exposure internationally?

Yes, we have.  We have members from all over the world.  We even had a couple of international members apart of our team in 2014.  So yes, we have had some international exposure and we are looking to increase that exposure in 2015.

8. Has the community grown progressively since you started?

We grew pretty quickly at the start of 2014, and throughout the year we have grown pretty steadily.  This past December and this month we have seen another huge growth, surge.  We attribute this partly to people looking for a new project for the New Year and hopping on board.

9. How do you motivate and keep the community inspired as it continues to grow?

We are really proud of our community in that they motivate and support each other daily.  We feel that it is very strong and diverse.  In addition, we try to create new and inspiring themes to help motivate and keep things fresh from week to week.  We are also working on a website that will hopefully launch soon and will help inspire, educate and motivate our community even more.
