Tony Detroit The Instagram Photographer
Instagrammer @TonyDetroit has become an Instagram sensation, with over 341,000 followers loving his stunning images that showcase the desolation of his home town, Detroit. Exclusively using only his iPhone, the iPhoneographer captures shots of abandoned houses, many of which were originally part of the Brewster-Douglass Housing Project. Most of the houses have since been burned down by an arsonist, including many of the houses that have interesting art work done to them. The art work was part of an initiative called the Heidelberg Project. Out of 7 or 8 of these houses that were part of the Heidelberg Project only 2 remain.
When we asked Tony about his account, he said that his Instagram beginnings were actually an accident.
“I started posting pictures to IG simply by mistake. I thought it was a photo editing app. I had no idea it was a photo sharing app. So when I posted my first picture, I was astounded that there were people out there that took an interest. That just motivated me more to get out there and take more pictures of my city. That first year, after IG made me a suggested user (which lasted a year and a half) I went out every day on long walks to document Detroit. The subjects that seemed to jump out at me were the abandoned houses. So I just snapped away. In retrospect, I’m glad I documented these houses, as the city now has demolished almost all the houses in my IG feed. Only a small handful remain.”
