1. Berlin, Germany
If there’s a place that knows how to do Christmas, is Germany. With its beautiful markets, mulled wine, and the savory scent of wurst cooking, a German Christmas is one to experience at least once. The beautifully lit Christmas trees against the Brandenburg gate inspires us to book a ticket to Berlin ASAP!
2. New York, USA
One of the most visited cities in the world is New York City, especially during the holiday season. Although the weather is unseasonably warmer this year, the holiday spirit reigns at the Rockefeller Center with its massive holiday display and iconic ice-skating rink.
3. Salzburg, Austria
If fairytales were real, they would be based in Salzburg. With its beautiful architecture and castles, it’s the perfect backdrop for a holiday display. The city is lined with beautiful markets with wooden handicrafts and you can stay warm with traditional Austrian schnapps.
4. Old San Juan, Puerto Rico
Did you know? Puerto Rico has one of the longest holiday seasons in the world! It starts after Thanksgiving and it extends until after Three Kings Day (January 6th). Although there’s no white Christmas, this island is filled with the holiday spirit with parties, food, and lots of music.
5. Tokyo, Japan
Although Christmas is not a traditional Japanese tradition, the city has an amazing collection of light displays throughout. A beautiful example is the Caretta Shiodome light display (shown), available from November 19th 2015 to February 14th, 2016.
6. Sydney, Australia
It is summer Down Under but that doesn’t keep Australians from celebrating the holiday season. From Santas surfing at Bondi Beach to an epic firework display at Harbour Bridge to celebrate the new year, the Aussies sure know how to have a good time.
7. Medellin, Colombia
Latin America has some of the liveliest Christmas season in the world with music, family time, and plenty of parties. Colombia is no exception. Cities from Bogota to Medellin are filled with colorful light displays throughout, like this display at the Plaza Mayor Expo Center.
8. Phoenix, Arizona
Christmas in the desert? Yes! The Greater Phoenix area is filled with holiday displays. From cacti surrounded by bright lights at the Luminaria display at the Desert Botanical Gardens to ice skating in 60-degree weather in Downtown Phoenix, there’s plenty to experience in this desert paradise.
9. Brussels, Belgium
The Grand Place in Brussels is a majestic view year-round and even more so throughout the holiday season. The square has an amazing light display which comes alive with music every evening throughout the season. Come hungry: from oysters to paella, there’s plenty of international food stands throughout the city center.
10. Montreal, Canada
Old Montreal is a slice of Europe in North America. This manifests itself even more throughout the holiday season with Christmas markets, intricate light displays, and perhaps a little snow. Christmas Mass at the Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal is a favorite of locals and visitors alike with tickets selling out months in advance.
